Advice on buying a puppy

Thinking of getting a puppy? Make sure you know where your puppy comes from.

Buying a puppy is not as simple as you may think. Sadly, not all puppy breeders and sellers are reputable.

There is a dark side to the trade - puppy trafficking. This is where puppies are bred in large numbers for profit, often with little regard for animal welfare. Many puppies fall sick, and some die.

Backyard breeder in Victoria

68 Dogs were surrendered from a backyard breeder in central Victoria. This person kept 120 dogs in appalling conditions and has been twice refused a council permit. About 50 dogs remain on the property.

Puppy Farm Awareness Day Rally

http://www.oscarslaw.org/index.php

The Puppy Farm Awareness Day Rally on 19th September 2010 at Parliament House in Melbourne was an absolute triumph. Thousands joined together with 60 animal welfare organisations around the state; supporters travelled from country areas and even interstate. We want Oscar's Law and the campaign will not cease until every puppy factory has been shut down.

Please visit this Oscar's Law website in the coming days for information about the next vital steps in the campaign.

RSPCA -Help us close puppy factories

Pledge your support to close down puppy factories (puppy mills) by signing the RSPCA campaign.
With your signature of support the RSPCA can approach the government to have the laws and legislations regulating puppy factories tightened, ultimately closing them down for good.

Breeders gone mad

If your thinking of buying a pedigree dog please research your chosen breed. Look at what the breed looked like 100years ago. Breeders of today are put under pressure to bred extremely over exaggerated features in order to compete in dog shows.

Dogs should be bred to be healthy intelligent companions with long happy lives and not for their physical appearance. Breeders need to be educated to rule out predispose illnesses in their chosen bred.

Avoid buying a dog from a show just because it has won a trophy. A show dog with a trophy or blue ribbon is not necessarily the healthiest dog.

Plastic surgery if not unheard of in dog shows. Tail docking and ear clipping are still common procedures.
Dogs are even having face lifts to compete in dog shows.

This is a series of youtube videos that expose how pedigree dogs are suffering for people's idea of beauty... It shows us how cold and uncaring breeders and dog breed clubs are toward man's best friend... ...

When Motherhood Means Suffering

Mother’s Day is meant to be a time of joy and appreciation. But for the countless canine mothers cruelly trapped and exploited in 'puppy farms', it's a day of suffering like any other.

In Australia these farms have anything from 20 to 1,000 breeding females who are kept constantly pregnant or lactating in order to keep up with demand.

Puppy farms are legal, as long as the proprietors meet the minimum standard of care. The law is different in each state and territory, but usually requires that the dog can stand up, turn around and lie down and that the pen has a partial roof.

The dogs can remain in these cages their entire life - there is no requirement for socialisation, exercise, grooming or bathing and certainly no requirement for love.

This Mother's Day take the time to learn about puppy farms and spread the word to help bring a better life to these puppy farm 'mums'.

Designer Dogs

Designer dogs (hybrid), such as a springerdoodle, labradoodle are becoming quite popular.
Hybrid puppies are a cross between two breeds, and are claimed by pet shops to be protected from genetic diseases. They are just as likely to have the same problems that other puppies have who come from large-scale, high-volume breeding, especially since the demand is massive and puppy mills are responding by pumping out the hybrids as quickly as possible.

Puppy mills are horrid breeding facilities that produce purebred and mixed-breed or "hybrid" puppies in large numbers and sell them to pet stores, or directly to consumers through the internet or newspaper ads, disguised as reputable breeders. Factory breeding like this increases the chances of a puppy having genetic, physical and emotional problems which may not be apparent at first.

DOGGIE RESCUE SHELTER FACES CLOSURE

DoggieRescue cares for and finds homes for unwanted dogs, saving
around 8,500 dogs from death row across Sydney over the past 18 years.
This vital service is under threat, which could worsen NSW's appalling
annual cat and dog euthanasia rate of over 63,000 animals.

The economic crisis has led to a significant drop in donations and an increase in people giving up their pets, leaving more dogs for DoggieRescue to save. DoggieRescue has said that if it does not raise significant funds in the coming weeks it will be forced to close operations, ceasing to save dogs from death-row.

Doggie Rescue is a registered charity and if you are able to donate
to keep it going, call 9486 3133 or visit www.DoggieRescue.com.au.

" Animals Not to be Sold in Pet Shops" Petition

Puppy mills are legal in Australia, and are supported by local councils and shockingly the Australian Veterinary Association doesn't support the bill.

Please take the time to read the Animals (Regulation of Sale) Bill 2008 introduced on motion by Ms Clover Moore.

Clover Moore MP petition Calling for Animals Not to be Sold in Pet Shops
Most puppies and kittens sold in pet shops are bred in "mill" where dogs and cats are kept in sub-standard conditions and continually bred until they die.
Cute puppies and kittens displayed in pet shops cause impulse purchases of pets who are then dumped when people realise the time, cost and responsibility of caring for a pet. The RSPCA received approximately 133 000 abandoned pets in 2002/03

The undersigned petitioners therefore request:
  • A ban on the sale of pets from pet retail outlets;
  • A ban on advertising that uses the display of animals or their pictures to promote impulse buying;
  • That the sale of pets be restricted to qualified registered breeders and pounds;
  • Detailed information on responsible ownership provided before sale, including an animal's expected lifespan, growth, dietary and exercise needs, and the cost of ownership.
If you would like to sign the petition Calling for Animals Not to be Sold in Pet Shops
Download the petition and send it to Clover Moore MP, 58 Oxford Street, PADDINGTON, NSW, 2021

What is a puppy mill ?

There are many websites that can answer this question, Prisoners for Profit is a good blog to start, and the Where do puppies come from website.

A puppy mill is a large factory where puppies are bred in small cages for profit, like battery hens.
It is currently legal to breed dogs in small cages for their entire life without any regard to their welfare. Breeding mothers are frighten, locked in small cages, with the sole purpose of producing puppies for the pet shop, internet and overseas markets.
In Australia these farms have anything from 20 to 1000 breeding females who are kept constantly pregnant or lactating in order to keep up with demand.
